Why consider waxing instead of shaving?
As opposed to shaving at home, having your hairs waxed by a professional offers several unique benefits. Not least the fact that waxing properly removes hairs and their roots, rather than just trimming them. What does this mean? Well, instead of hair growing back straight away, with waxing, the area will remain smooth for up to 2 weeks!
Then, when the hair does eventually start to grow back, it comes back thinner and lighter. In fact, with regular waxing over time, hair growth can diminish massively, requiring you to treat areas far less frequently. Finally, our clients love the fact that waxing also helps to exfoliate their skin, as dead skin is removed during the treatment process.
14 top tips for the perfect waxing experience
To help gain maximum benefit from waxing parts of your body, here are 14 top tips from our team of specialists.
1. Be upfront about any allergies or sensitivities
It is natural for people to have allergic reactions to different types of wax used. For that reason, you should tell your esthetician about any allergies you have so they can choose a suitable wax for you.
2. Consider doing an allergy patch test
If you’re not sure what you are allergic to, then it’s worth doing an allergy patch test. Your doctor can help with this, alternatively, come and speak to us in-store and we can advise you further.
3. Learn how your skin reacts to waxing
If you have an important event coming up, such as a wedding, then we don’t recommend waxing a new area for the first time. Different areas of your body may react differently to waxing, which may upset your image.
4. Cover up any lesions or moles
You should cover any lesions or moles with a bandaid prior to waxing. Tearing them off can be very dangerous and potentially lead to an increased risk of cancer.
5. Consider taking pain relief
If you are very sensitive to pain, then it is often a good idea to take some mild pain relief prior to your appointment. Simple paracetamol or ibuprofen is usually sufficient to remove most of the discomfort.
6. Wear loose-fitting clothes
After your appointment, you may find that your skin is sensitive to the touch. That’s why we always recommend customers wear loose-fitting clothing that won’t then rub on the area you’ve just had treated.
7. Avoid tanning before your appointment
We advise leaving at least a week between any tanning and waxing appointments. Not only will areas be more sensitive and sore, but it can also lead to newly tanned skin being taken away during the waxing.
8. Treat any sunburn or rashes in advance
Similarly, waxing over areas that have recently suffered from sunburn or some sort of rash can be much sorer. As such, it’s best to fully treat such areas before having them waxed.
9. Hydrate your skin
We find that waxing dried skin can be much more painful than well-hydrated skin. That’s why you should have a nice warm bath on the day of your waxing, to ensure your skin is soft and easier to wax.
10. Apply moisturiser before your appointment
Another great way to hydrate your skin is to moisturise it a few hours before the appointment.
11. Use an exfoliant
Exfoliating just before your appointment will help to remove any dead skin and trapped hairs.
12. Let your hair grow before the next waxing
It’s always best to leave at least one to two weeks between each waxing. This will allow hair to reach a sufficient length to then be re-waxed. Hair that is at least one-quarter of an inch long works best.
13. Avoid waxing during sensitive periods
Normally, the best time to be waxed is a week or so after your menstrual cycle. This is when your skin is least sensitive, so will be much less painful.
14. Use a professional
For the best results, it is always a good idea to get waxed by a fully trained and experienced salon professional. This will minimise the chances of any unwanted discomfort, whilst leading to the smoothest possible finish.
